Inferno, written by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle – This book was nominated for the Hugo and Nebula Awards. It is a remake of Dante’s Inferno. A writer ends up killing himself accidently and finds himself in the first level of hell. He makes a friend there and is convinced there is a way out of hell. Unfortunately, he has to travel down to the lowest part of hell. The further they go the more horrifying the punishments they come across.
Ender’s Game, written by Orson Scott Card – The novel won the Nebula Award for best novel in 1985 and the Hugo Award for best novel in 1986. Posting soon.
Juxtaposition, written by Piers Anthony – Stile, the main character lives in a world ruled by science and games. He discovers he can cross over to a parallel world that is ruled by magic. On the other side, he discovers he’s alternate self has died and he takes his place as a power wizard.
Wielding a Red Sword, also written by Piers Anthony – This is book 4 of a series that I read before the 1st one. I did not realize this at the time of its reading. The story is about an Indian Price who defies his family and runs away with the circus. He comes in possession of a red sword. The sword makes him take the office of War. Another words, he becomes the Incarnation of war and is in charge of everything in the world concerning war. He must battle Satan in the book and insure war is fought fairly.
The Stainless Steel Rat, written by Harry Harrison - James Bolivar diGriz is the galaxy’s best thief and con-man. He’s out-conned by the government and forced to work with them to save the Galaxy. It’s basically White Collar written 40 years ago with a sci-fi bend to it.
The Dawn Theater, written by C.S. Lewis – Another book I read in a series first when it wasn’t. This book introduced me to fantasy books. I liked the story and it was well written.
The Elfstones of Shannara, written by Terry Brooks – Evil is escaping its jail. The jail keeper is a magical tree. The tree’s life-force magically keeps evil in a void. The tree is dying. The quest is to find a fountain to help the tree survive. The good guys and the bad guys are epic and the story telling is awesome. My favorite character in the book is Allanon. There’s a part towards the end when there is an epic battle against the people and an army of demons. There is a part that basically reads. All manner of creatures tried on kill the Druid. Some were small and some were large. Some came from the sky and some came from underground. The clawed there way over each other in swarms to reach him. He killed them all. (That’s paraphrased of a memory from over a decade ago.)
The Crystal Shard, written by R.A. Salvatore – Drizzit is a Dark Elf and the main character in this book. If you read fantasy books, chances are this is your favorite character out of all the books you’ve read; at least in the top 3. He’s an outcast from his people because they are evil and he is good. He makes his way in a strange land among humans and dwarves who have learned to hate all Dark Elves. Drizzit through his strength in character and friendship forges an exception for himself among the surface dwellers.
Armor – This is my all time favorite book. It was written by John Steakly. This book is about Felix. Felix has no last name because they don’t tell you about his background until the end. The first 98 pages of the book are like Starship Troopers on steroids. The difference here is we are losing badly. Time and time again, Felix is the only survivor. He’s scared shitless and wants to lie down and let it all end, but there’s an “Engine” in him that refuses to die.
Cut to part two of the book. Jack Crowe, one of the galaxy’s most notorious outlaw escapes from prison. Though a series of events he’s introduced by a scientist to Felix’s battle suit. They hack into Felix’s battle suit like virtual reality and discover what Felix went through. Through Felix’s experience they live their worst nightmares. They go though battle after battle expecting he’ll die and not understanding how he doesn’t.
