How do get help with VA benefits (medical) (Texas).

How do get help with VA benefits

Get the Texas Veterans Commission to help.

When I left the military, I did myself a great disservice. I had hurt my back while I was in the service. It was extremely painful. I ended up with a crushed disk, a herniated disc, and a ruptured disk. Somewhere in this mess it was pinches nerves. I could feel great pain in down my right leg and left testical. All this was confirmed during my 3rd tour. I should have insured I left with a medical discharge. The VA had decided before I left that I would receive a 10% discount. To this day, I have to walk a tightrope. If I gain too much weight, the pressure causes extreme pain. If I exercise to keep my weight down, eventually, I hurt my back again to a server degree.

After seeing so many veterans receiving large percentages for minor injuries, I wanted to ask for more. However, I did not know what to do. When I visited my local VA outpatient clinic for my yearly physical, they suggested I speak to the representatives for the Texas Veterans Commission. They were stationed there at the clinic. The helped my fill out all the paperwork and sent it off. They even helped me with instructions on what to do after the paperwork went out. I highly recommend asking for their help.

Go in person. Dealing with the government by phone or Internet is silly.

CareerBuilder: We are looking for 20 representatives in US - Scam

Here's another email in a long list of emails I get from Career Builder. They really should do something to police their business better. This is sincerely out of hand.

There are obvious things to look at here to make me believe this is a scam and is not legit.

No one pays $95,000 for basic computer and office skills. Not only that, I don't believe international jobs from large firms just happen to drop into my email account; especially if I'm not actively looking.

They always make their offers to good to be true.

The Best Vacation Spot in North America

Let me give some validation for my travel opinion. I have been to 7 countries and 38 states in the U.S. I know this does not make me an expert, but I have been around a bit. This is also a personal view and not based of any type of raw data. I personally believe the best vacation spot in North America is Quebec City, Canada. I liked the place so much, I kept taking people back with me. If I currently, had the time and money, I would go again.

My first experience of Quebec City was on a Military exercise. We were sent to a base just outside of the city. It was February and we were there for cold weather training. The first two weeks we were there it never rose above -20 degrees. Luckily for us it was during the Ice Festival. So, on the weekends and at night we had the chance to experience the city. My friend and I happened to meet a heavy metal band from Quebec City. We spent a lot of time partying with them. After this trip, I ended up taking friends, girlfriends, parents and my wife with me. No, not all at the same time, lol. It was over a few years. Some of my best memories comes from there.

Quebec City has also been voted by a few travel magazines for 1st place also. It has been stated that if you want to go to Paris and can't afford it, go to Quebec instead. The main language is french. However, most people speak English. especially, if it's at a hotel, restaurant, or shop. Some things you have to check out when you go are:

Galeries de la Capitale - This is a large mall. I believe it's three stores but it might be two. It's very large through. It has an gaming center across from the food court with an Ice skating rink in between. It even has an roller coaster that goes through the walls and over the food court and ice skating rink. It's awesome.

When I was not staying with friends, I would always stay at the Quality Suites right outside the Galeries de la Capitale. The people were always nice and I liked the fact that the bedroom was a separate room.

The bars and clubs are cool. For the life of me, I can't remember any of their names. Be sure you try the Molson XXX if you are a drinker. One of my favorite beers in the world.

The street cafes are cool along with the shopping in the downtown area. There is always something go on. There is usually a Jazz Festival every summer and one year while we were there the World Fair was in town.

Educated Idiots

Perhaps you have seen the following situation in the national news or witnessed it at your local school: A bully is consistently beating on a fellow student. The student has told the school faculty about the situation. The bully is politely told to stop, but he does not. Finally, when the faculty is unable or unwilling to put a stop to it, the person being bullied retaliates. A teacher witnesses the situation and the student that was being harassed is suspended.

The schools tell the kids, "Under no circumstances are you to retaliate. Just walk away and notify a teacher." Well, kids are doing this and nothing happens. What do you expect the kids to do? Just let it keep happening until one day they can't walk away like, Sawyer Rosenstein

Let's put a school official in a hypothetical situation. Let's say I punch them in the face until I get bored with it. Afterwards, they call the police and inform them of what I've done. They politely tell me no to do it again. I agree. This happens 3 more times. Are they just going to continue letting me hit them in the face? I don't think so. Once they realize the police are unwilling or unable to do anything about me, then they will decided to do something about it.

These school officials are putting unreal expectations on kids who are being bullied.

What should I expect when I first start investing

It's a shame I didn't ask this questions in the beginning. Of course, I may have not received an answer either. Most of the people I know don't have a clue when it comes to investing.

My first experience in investing would have been shortly after I left the army. I had amassed a whopping $1,000 in savings. It was time to get rich. In case you didn't know it, your options are limited when you only have $1,000 to invest. I was undecided between buying shares in Southwest Airlines or an Oakmark Mutual Fund. This would have been back in 1996. I decided to try the Oakmark fund. The funds were growing at a decent rate. Unfortunately, I decided to pull the money out and invest it into an online business I started in 1998. I'm sure you can imagine how that went.

In 2004, I decided it would be a good idea to start putting money into my job’s 401k. This really is a no-brainer. You put $1 in and they match $1. You just doubled your money. Of course there are some other things involved, but basically that's it. When the market nose-divided in 2008, I saw a great opportunity. I started to put 15% of my paycheck in my 401k. I figured either the marked would rebound like it always has or our money was going to be worth nothing anyways. This was the first smart thing I did. It paid off pretty well.

After leaving this job, I was left without the option to continue investing in that 401k. So, it was now time to try investing on my own. I had been watching Mad Money over the last few months and reading stock related teachings on the Internet.

What I realized after a while was none of these people really knew what to do for certain. Take CNBC for an example, none of the experts can agree and what they say on way day is contradicted by them on the next day.

In all his mess, I find Jim Cramer on Mad Money the clearest voice of help or instruction. However, there is still a problem. Cramer does not hit 100%. Currently he holds a couple of dozen stocks in his charitable trust. Some of these stocks go up and some go down. Most of them go up.    I have no idea which ones they will be. Neither doe he or he wouldn't have the losers. I can't afford to buy stock in all of them. So, now what? If I pick the wrong one, I’m in trouble.

It would seem evident that I should stop trying to be a stock guru and just stick with a few well run mutual funds. Ah, now another problem. There are a lot of sucky funds.

Maybe you’re familiar with the repeated statement, "80% of all funds do not outpace the S&P 500." At this point, I believe index funds are a smart choice for a non-investor who wants to invest. Unless, someone is willing to get a ton of education and risk, then a fund like Vanguards index 500 fund is a great choice.

Free Software every home user should have.

Free Software every home user should have.

Avira Antivirus – First, I’m not a big fan of paying for antivirus. I feel there are too many good free services available. Many people look to McAfee or Norton as industry leaders, but I personally believe they cause problems with the overall operation of my system. I have tried some other free service. However, Avira has outperformed all other test runs. I have been running Avira since 1997 and I’m on the net more than the average user. I have never had a problem with their service. To run an antivirus for 15 years and not have any problems has me sold.

Advanced System Care – This has become a very popular tool recently. It’s very easy to use and has some good functions to it. The turbo booster which comes with it is a must have. I have a particular computer that does not have the minimum specs to play certain games. However, with the turbo booster on, I have no issues. In addition, it has general spyware and privacy cleaners. There is also a registry cleaner packed in. Many experts will state these registry cleaners are a bad idea. Yet, I’ve run this for the last 3 years and I haven’t had any trouble.

Malwarebytes – I really don’t need to go into this one too much. Ask any of your computer knowledge friends and they already know about this product. If you have a virus, running Malwarebytes in safe mode is very effective. It does take about an hour to run the program, but it’s worth the wait.

How to get free college as a Veteran or a child of a Veteran without the G.I. Bill.

This article is for veterans from Texas. However, maybe it will spark a solution for you if you are out of state, also.

I hate school. I hate what I do worse. So, I figured I would try to do something in IT. The issue was my time to use the G.I. Bill had run out. The time you have to use a G.I. Bill is 10 years. There’s a way you can extend it to 15, but I did not qualify for that reason. I also had no money to pay for college and taking out a loan was not an option for me. The solution to my dilemma was The Hazlewood Act. It gives 150 hours to veterans who registered Texas as their home of residence. If you do not use it, you can pass it on to your kids.

Now, if you are like me, you just want an associate’s degree, don’t want to go to class, and want it in IT. Remember, I hate school. I can see two years, but not 4. Maybe, I’ll change my mind afterwards. One of the major rules is it has to be a state college. Most Texas state colleges don’t offer Associates degrees for their online courses. So, I had another dilemma.

After all my research, there was only one college that fit the requirements:

Texas State College
Offered Associates degrees in IT through online courses.

The college is Central Texas College. Everything is done through the web including interacting with the college. They basically cater to active duty military and military spouses. It was perfect for me. After my next class, I’m half way to getting my degree and I’ll receive a certificate of Help Desk Specialist. Hopefully, I’ll get some experience before my degree hits.
